I'm with Cappa. But how long will the stock D-35 last with 35-inch tires and lockers? Not long I'm afraid. Still, upgrade that rear axle and run with the much cooler Sport.

Couldn't the 4:1 be used in second or third gear for the wheelspeed you need for sand and mud?

Not really, the top speed in low range is about 25 mph, and that's in Sixth gear or Fourth with the auto. You just don't have a very wide speed range to work with. And if you need to rock the vehicle to get unstuck, forget it. Sure you could use Third when rocking forward but as soon as you hit Reverse in Low Range you'll loose the rocking motion and remain stuck. It's just too slow for anything but heavy rock and slow trail use.

Great article covering exactly my dilemma. Would any of you experts' POVs change w/ the new Pentastar and auto combo? Although my old TJ was a stick, I plan to buy the 2012 w/ an auto for a few reasons. The article here on how good the auto is cemented that.

I'm tempted by the Rubi but think I'm talking myself out of it w/ the help of this article. I plan to run 35s. I favor fender/flare mods and body lifts to keep COG low and new parts to a minimum. Will I also need coil spacers or a lift to run 35s, though, or can I do it with a flatfender treatment and narrow tires?  

Any advice much appreciated!

micahd - it'd depend on your intended usage, but for me my perfect JK would be a 2012 Unlimited Sport with the WA580 five-speed auto and 2.72:1 T-case. I'd probably try to run 35s with the stock 3.73 gears. It'd be perfect if you could order the non-Rubicon with factory 4.10 gears, but alas - no such luck. Eventually I'd swap in some 4.10s and a Dynatrac D44 front axle and reuse the stock Dana 30 outers and add ELockers front and rear. Still cheaper than a Rubicon.

Hello, I wish this artical was out when I boubgt my rubicon. I would have went with a regular jeep. After my four inch lift and 33 inch tires it looked great but trying to go mudding or play in the sand wtf? the tcase sounds like it is going to blowup. You cant get up any speed trying to go through mud and also the gears are so low you just dig yourself a hole and get stuck. The high gear has no power at all for mud and sand. I am trading it in for a non-rubicon. thanks

I have an 03 Rubicon with 33's and 4.10 gears. Agreed that 4low is very low for any deep mud but I installed a locker bypass switch, which means I can run the lockers in 4hi. I have had my Rubicon in the mud to the bottom of the body with lockers engaged and in 4hi. No problem with enough power or wheel speed. Have yet to see any smiley axles as well. I think the Rubicon is a great jeep unless you are a hard core rock crawler. Then you want dana 60's anyways.

I bought an '03 Rubicon, then traded up to an '05 Unlimited Rubicon. (Interestingly, the Unlimited is within an inch or two in every dimension of the old CJ6).

I have run 35's for almost 9 years now, and just last week have broken my first axle. Not quite as fragile as some like to claim. Living in CA, I do a mix of rock crawling (Rubicon, Fordyce, etc) as well as sand (Pismo) and snow (Sierras in the winter). No problem with the supposedly too-low gearing. I think the Rubi is a great starting platform for a medium to high level buildup. If your idea of 'wheeling is a V8 with the throttle to the floor until you either make it or break it (Cappa), you probably don't want a Rubicon. You probably need an M715 with a V8 and Rockwells.

A Rubicon isn't the best for everyone (that's why they make different models), but it is the right one for a lot of people. I have a comfortable dd that can handle 75mph on the way to Fordyce, do all five winch hills unassisted, then drive home. How many of you can say that?

In the spring of '06 JP Magazine noted that the 4.0L was being discontinued and replaced with a mini van motor in the next generation Jeep, the JK.   As luck would have it, I had saved up enough cash to buy a new TJ!  I love the 4.0L and decided to buy a new Jeep while I could!

I debated at the time to go with a TJ Sport or a Rubicon.  I ended up going with a Sport, but with a D44 Rear Axle, 231 T Case and 3.73 gears and 30x9.50x15 tires.  My YJ had a D35 rear Axle and I didn't want to relive the hassle of dealing with another D35 down the road.

Since I tend to do more trail riding and drivingsnowy Canadian roads than I do rock any sort of rock climbing or mud bogging, the sport was the way to go.

But the debate of what to do with your Jeep never really ends.

I have been toying with the idea of a lift kit along with 33 inch tires along with a winch...
