We needed to grind just a tad off the top of the bolts heads to keep the fit level.
Every time you open the hood to check the oil on your 258, those unsightly vacuum lines, switches and wires keep staring you in the face. You sit and wonder how much of that mess is still working. If you don't have to worry about smog laws, a nice replacement for the hard-starting stock Carter is the Weber K551. It's a complete kit that allows you to remove all of the emissions garbage and bring new life to the 4.2L.
Install:
* Make sure you have a flush fit when installing adapter plates. We had to grind a bit off of an Allen head to keep it level.
* The instructions ask that you seal the tops of the Allen heads on the adapter plates. It's important to do this properly. Clean out the extra sealant on the inside of the plates.
* Adjust throttle linkage correctly and use thread-locking compound on hardware.
* We used the included stronger return spring.
* Hooking up the breather tube from the valve cover to the air filter is a little difficult. You may have to put a small filter on as an oil breather rather than routing it into the carb.
Test:
* The engine starts faster and runs much better than stock.
* It runs slow (down on power) at higher altitude. Like all carbs, it needs to be adjusted for different altitudes.
* It can flood on uphill climbs but does well on rough surfaces and downhill.
* The system was more responsive and faster than stock.
