Since we're not quite ready to pull the trigger on the transmission swap we teased you with in the last installment of our Steal-J '97 Wrangler buildup series, we've decided to show you our thought process as we decide what to do with the crappy Dana 35 rear axle. It's a given that a re-gear is in order, what with the 31-inch tires and 3.07 axle gears. But do we go for a simple re-gear, try to build the existing Dana 35 into something survivable, or swap the whole thing out for something stronger? And if so, then what do we swap in its place?
We'll outline some of our choices below as to what to do with the rear axle. Next month we'll outline all the feasible options for the front axle. Then, we'll actually pull the trigger and cover the install of which choice works best for this vehicle's mission as a dependable daily driver and dedicated weekend warrior.

Pros: Certain parts can be done over time as budget allows. Allows retention of existing upgrades (brakes and so on). Gets 1.31-inch, 30-spline shafts.
Cons: Retains relatively weak D35 ring-and-pinion, retains C-clips, uses Detroit Locker (which can cause handling quirks in TJ). Axletubes still vulnerable to bending.
