The system includes a high-output alternator. It bolts right into your original brackets. Ours puts out 160 amps max and 50 amps at idle. Others are available including a 27-pound 200-amp monster. Your options will vary depending on your Jeep and how much fabrication you want to do.

Space is limited under our hood so we stole this trick mounting idea that we had seen on another Jeep. The welder flips up under the dash and is held in place with a threaded knob when not in use. The wiring harness is clearly labeled for easy installation. It took us more time to build our mount than to set up the rest of the welder. The bracket is welded together and made from a small door hinge, a 6-inch by 3-inch sheet of steel, an old Wrangler spring bushing, a 5/16 coarse thread nut, and a cool knob we found at the hardware store.

We installed the throttle control in an existing hole on the dash. Mount the knob where you can see the gauge on the welder while you are adjusting the output. The other end of the control is connected to the throttle linkage with a small chain.
A lot of people would rather leave welding and fabrication to a shop. But what about when youre out in the boonies and your Jeep blows apart like Al Gores political career. AAA and your mechanic are nowhere in sight so you have to fix it the best you can with what you have. Of course you always carry common hand tools but those wont do you much good when your suspension, driveline, or steering is scattered on the ground. Being a victim of unsuspected breakage and having to wait around for someone to come by is worse than going to a topless bar with no cash. One trail tool that probably rescues more hopelessly broken Jeeps than any other tool is a welder. There are a few onboard welders available including those that are nothing more than jumper cables used to connect several batteries together. The most well known onboard unit is probably the Premier Power Welder. It offers the ability to weld, charge dead batteries, and even run 110-volt tools and appliances. Heres some install and welding tips that will have you sparkin arc in no time.
