South-of-the-Border CJ
This shot of an '81 CJ-5, owned by Armando Arce from Lakeside, California, was taken on a trail called "Simpson" somewhere south of the border. We were told that the trail is part of a Baja 500 course, and it had some casualties, but the CJ wasn't one of them. The Jeep is basically stock, with a 258ci six-cylinder engine, a 1-bbl carburetor, and a four-speed trans. The only aftermarket addition is a set of Warn hubs, as he grenaded a stock one on the sand dunes.

Basic and Black
When building his '98 TJ, Jamie Ossi of Jacksonville, Florida, decided to keep it basic. The stock 3.73s are in the differentials, still driven by the NP231 and three-speed auto trans. Power comes from the stock six-cylinder engine and turns the 33x9.50-15 BFG Mud Terrains on the stock rims. Trail Master stepped in with a 2-inch suspension lift and SSV shocks to clear the tires and hold up the Tomken rocker guards and Warrior winch bumper. Rubicon Express disconnects help when he needs that extra flex to keep the tires on the ground and maintain headway.

H.O. 4.0 '89 XJ
Yep, that's right. Gone is the Renix injected 4.0 that should be there, and a H.O. version from a later-model XJ was swapped in. Gabriel Watt from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, has a 3-inch Rancho lift clearing 31x10.50-15 BFG AT tires on 15x8 Eagle 589s. Out back is the stock Dana 35 with a Detroit locker and hardened 30-spline axleshafts, while up front resides the stock Dana 30. Gabriel ditched the NP242 in favor of the simpler NP231 and added a K&N air filter, Thorley headers, and a Jardine after-cat to help give the XJ more chutzpah.
