This is what we're building our '73 Hot Dog J-truck around: Interco Super Swamper Irok 21/49-17 tires. From this perspective, the chest-high tires don't look like they'll ever fit. Heck, four of them barely fit in the back of a shortbed Ford Super Duty.

The stock suspension found on '63-'73 Jeep trucks really isn't up for stiff heavily arched leaf springs or the weight of huge axles and big tires. If you're only looking for a moderate lift (4 inches), BJ's Off-Road should have lift springs for the '63-'73s (among other FSJs) available by the time you read this.

It didn't take us long to realize the reproduction Eaton M-715 springs weren't all that different from the factory '73 Hot Dog boingers. M-715s get their lift from lower-mounted spring brackets on the sides of the frame. After taking the Matco torch (PN WS510) to our old factory spring mounts, we headed back to the drawing board.

Plan B involves using '74-and-later FSJ lift springs mounted under the frame. These Rancho leafs (PN 44044) will provide a huge lift over stock when mounted under the frame and on top of our Rockwells, but it still may not be enough to clear our monster 49s.

M.O.R.E. offers these spring hangers that save us a lot of fabrication time on our shackle reversal. They are built for CJs and YJs, but they're easily modified for use on our FSJ. We trimmed a little of the top and will burn them in once we figure out exactly how far forward we need to locate the axle to keep the tires out of the doors of our Jeep.
