Taking a Four-Cylinder TJ to V-8 Power
First carefully pull out the AX5 transmission and 2.5L four-cylinder. Removing the front grille, radiator and fenders will make the swap go more smoothly. Be careful when disconnecting fuel, A/C and electrical fittings. Label everything, as you will have to reuse some wiring, fuel lines, and A/C componentry.
The four-cylinder and old transmission can be sold to help recover some of the swap cost, so don't destroy them or toss 'em in the trash unless a rod is hanging out of the oil pan and Reverse is the only functioning gear in the tranny.
The four-cylinder motor mounts must be removed from the framerails so the Dodge V-8 motor mounts (Advance Adapters PN 713094) can be installed. The new mounts are located on the frame with pre-existing dowel holes and are welded in place. You also have to remove the original Dodge mounts from the engine, as the two cast mounting tabs (per side) on the front of the engine will now be used.
The NV3500's shifter is removed and a plate is fabricated to move the stock TJ transmission mount rearward. A Daystar mount (PN KJ01006BK) was added, and the transmission ended up about 2 inches forward of the stock AX5's location. Both the AX5 and AX15 use the same release bearing and fork as the NV3500, so your stock slave cylinder will bolt in place on the Dodge bellhousing. We also used an Advance Adapters stainless steel braided hydraulic slave cylinder hose (PN 716130H and two PN 716130TJ) to replace the factory plastic unit.
