It’s easy to spot two-piece axles. They have large retaining nuts on the ends that hold the shafts and the flanges together, sometimes. If you use your Jeep in the dirt, get rid of the two-piece shafts. Not only did the AMC 20 come with this design, some Dana 44s also have two-piece shafts so look out if you are axle swapping.

It’s common to find the axletubes on AMC 20 axles welded to the centersections. This one is weld-free. Four short stitch welds (about 1/2 inch long) around the diameter will hold the tubes just fine. A full weld bead around the tube may eventually crack because the cast centersection and the steel tubes flex differently.

When choosing a one-piece kit for your AMC 20 look for forged shafts like those found in the kits from Superior Axle & Gear. These shafts have rolled splines. This allows the splines to be made before heat treating, producing a splined area that’s 35 percent stronger than a cut-splined axle.

The same goes for the ring gears. A Dana 44 (right) has a ring-gear diameter of 8 1/2 inches. The AMC 20 gear (left) has a diameter of 8 7/8 inches. However, newer Dana 44s have 1.31-inch 30-spline shafts. The 20 has 1.25-inch 29-spline shafts. Older 44s have 1.25-inch shafts with either 10 or 19 splines.

If you thought about swapping in a Dana 44 in place of your AMC 20, take a look here. The pinion of the 20 (right) is bigger and stronger than a 44 piece (left).

It’s best to stay away from one-piece axle kits that require endplay adjustment. The correct setting is obtained by placing shims under the left-side axle. Kits with shims are notorious leakers.

The axle bearings on AMC 20 axles are not bathed in gear oil. Don’t be fooled by one-piece kits with grease fittings attached to the retainer. They don’t properly lubricate the bearing. If deep water and mud is the norm for your Jeep, remove the axles and grease the bearings after each outing.

The older the AMC 20 is the more fatigued the factory shafts and flanges become. Once the large nut on the end is loose, it’s all over for the keyways. If you still have two-piece axles, keep an eye on these nuts.

The full-floater wheel bearings are more serviceable. It’s also a stouter design because it incorporates two bearings instead of one. If you knock out the spindle seals, the bearings will be bathed in gear oil instead of grease—the same as 1-ton trucks.
