Build or Rebuild?

We all either have tried to get our Jeeps to make power, or we will. There is no such thing as too much power, but too little power is always a problem. The question we have to ask is: Is our Jeep’s engine ready for performance modifications or not? In short, is it time to build or rebuild? Well, there are a few things you can look for and a few tests you can perform to find out. OK, so you say that your Jeep is in tip-top shape and is ready for a big lumpy cam and four-barrel carburetor, but how can you be sure? Unless you’ve owned your Jeep since it was new and have taken care of it like it was your only child, you can’t be sure that your engine won’t spin a bearing a week after you get done with that cam installation. The fact of the matter is that cherry CJ you picked up a few weeks ago may have low mileage, but it could have had only one or two oil changes in the past ten years. Or better yet, it may have been sitting around for the past five years with rust building up on the cylinder walls, gaskets drying up, and a family of field mice living in the air cleaner. We have compiled a list of things to check. Check them all and if you pass, start bolting on power products. If you fail one you’d better spend your money on repairs.
