Seems like were forgetting about trail repair.
Repairing a bias tire on the trail is much easier than radials.
With radials you take 1 spare and thats it, with bias you can take the spare tire itself plus 4 tubes and your set.

Quick example:
I was off roading with some friends in my old M151A2 military jeep. I was leading and i ran over a board with some screws in it that some jerk had left on the trail. It only hit the front right tire so i put on the spare. Later I put a 4" gash in the side wall and all we did was pop the tire off the rim, put several layers of duct tape over the gash and put in a new tube. We popped it back on the rim and aired it up and continued on our way. With a radial you'd be screwed!
