Sometimes the force of the axleshafts separating removes the outer knuckle from the axle. In this case, the lower ball joint separated, while the upper one only pulled out of the knuckle. Using a jack or hammer, press the lower one back together as well as possible, pound the race back into it, and tack weld it. Then, reinstall the upper ball joint, reassemble the brakes, bearings, and so on then limp out. It would be wise not to put power to that wheel, if at all possible.

After it's straightened, clean off any rust or paint for later welding. If you don't have a welder, it's still wise to clean the grease and dirt off of it.

Of course, you pack a foot or two of angle iron, as it can be used for all sorts of repairs. Take the angle iron and weld it to the link, or use the ever-popular Hi-Lift handle-sleeve technique.

Another welding repair is...

Another welding repair is the old CJ spring-hanger fix. Especially in the rustbelt, these things tear off the frame with some regularity. Either get it back in place or, using some of your angle iron, weld it back on. Also, we've lashed the hanger back onto the frame using a chain as well as rope called Mule Tape. If you are good at Boy Scout knots and lashings, it will be enough to get you off the trail.
